According to information released by the school, 31 graduates plan to continue education, 22 plan to take jobs and one is enlisting in the Army.
Craig's graduation exercises will be June 9 at 8 p.m. The speaker will be Cindy Farmer, a weather reporter for WSLS-TV Channel 10 in Roanoke.
The graduation exercise will be on the football field behind the school if the weather permits. If not, it will be in the school's auditorium.
Craig's graduates also will have a baccalaureate service Sunday at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. The speaker at that will be the Rev. Paul St. Clair, pastor of Craig Valley Baptist Church in New Castle.
Harriet Hypes, guidance counselor at the school, said that of the 31 graduates planning to continue education, 14 will go to foiur-year colleges, seven are bound for two-year community colleges and 10 are planning to enroll in trade or technical schools.
In most cases, she said, the graduates will be going to schools in Virginia or North Carolina.
Of two graduates who discussed their opinions of the lure of the Roanoke Valley and Southwestern Virginia, graduate Michael Jones, 18, said his plans were to enter Virginia Commonwealth University in September and major in pharmacy.
"I plan to come back here after college," he said. "I think there are enough opportunities in the area in pharmacy."
Jones, a son of Ronald C. and Muriel Jones of New Castle, also said he would return to Craig during the summers and work somewhere in this area.
Jennifer Jones, 17, is headed for the University of Virginia and a career in engineering, architecture or a related field.
She plans to seek her immediate fortunes in Craig because she has the assurance of a summer job in New Castle between college sessions. After that, however, her plans are a bit uncertain. But she is fairly sure she will not stay in Craig where she now lives with her parents, Scott and Ritta Jones in New Castle.
She said she will leave because of limited opportunities in this area in either engineering or architecture.
"There are not too many opportunities for them around here," she said. "I feel I will have to go to another area."
But she cites another reason for possibly leaving. She just wants to get acquainted with another area of the country.
"I think I'd like to go out West," she said. "Colorado, maybe."
But if a good opportunity opens on the East Coast, she will stay on this side of the country.
