CHURCH CENTER TO OPEN IN JUNE

With help from a $2,500 grant from Radford Community Hospital, a new day-care facility on Wadsworth Avenue is scheduled to open in mid-June.

After spending about $15,000 to bring part of Central United Methodist Church up to licensing standards for a child-care center, the new Central Children's Center will offer care for about 60 children age 2 1/2 to 11 years.

The center will open June 18, assuming the state license application is approved, said Barbara Clay, chairwoman of the board.

"It's very exciting," said Clay. "We're a community service-oriented congregation and this can be looked on as a mission of the church."

In exchange for the grant money, 15 spaces have been reserved for children of employees at Radford Community.

Members of Central United's congregation also have first dibs on available space. Any remaining space is open to the public.

"We will also have a waiting list," said Anne Boyd, director of the new center.

Costs for care are set at $60 per week per preschool child, $45 per child in kindergarten and $35 for each school-age child. A $20 registration fee is required and insurance may be obtained for $4.75 per year.

The center will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
