SANDWICH COMPANY FACES INJUNCTION

The Justice Department said Thursday it has sued Stewart Sandwiches Inc. to enjoin the Norfolk, Va., company from making and distributing sandwiches until it complies with federal health laws.

The complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Norfolk charges that Stewart made sandwiches containing potentially life-threatening bacteria.

Stewart is accused in the lawsuit of failing to control bacteria contamination at its plant in violation of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The department said the Food and Drug Administration received a two complaints on April 12 - one from Florida authorities another from Lousiana officials - that bacteria had been found in sandwiches made by Stewart.

Two private test laboratories hired by Stewart also found bacteriological contamination during an inspection of the company's cooked food section in April, the department said.
