WYTHE COUNTY HALL READY TO INDUCT FIVE

The Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame will induct five members Aug. 2 at Fort Chiswell High School.i

The leader in voting by a 12-member committee was the late Roy Irvin, who played football, baseball and basketball at Wytheville High School in the 1920s, and went on to star at Milligan College. Irvin later taught and coached at Wytheville and George Wythe High until his death in 1967.

The others to be added to the Hall of Fame in the 7 p.m. ceremony are: Kent Umberger, Greensboro, N.C., who played a number of sports at George Wythe and Appalachian State, and coached at a Greensboro high school before going into the construction business.i

R. William Arthur, a former Wytheville mayor and retired circuit judge who announced high school football games at Withers Field for 20 years and also covered sports for newspapers.i

Charles Freemen, Austinville, a Fort Chiswell High athlete who set three New River District football records in 1966 and has been president of his alma mater's athletic booster club for four years;i

Danny Copenhaver, Midlothian, who lettered a record 14 times at George Wythe from 1961-1965.i
