STUDY: FREIGHT CARRIERS LAUD RAIL DEREGULATION

A new General Accounting Office study indicates that most freight customers - with the exception of the coal industry - are happy with the effects of railroad deregulation under the Staggers Act.

The study found that on the average rail rates declined by 22 percent during the past decade and that railroad profitability still trails behind almost every other major industry, the magazine Traffic World reports in its most recent edition.

The GAO declined to offer an opinion on whether coal shippers were justified in their criticism of deregulation.
