LAW LICENSE OF JUDGE SUSPENDED

The Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board on Tuesday temporarily suspended the law license of General District Judge Joseph H. Campbell, who was convicted of altering a traffic ticket for a friend.

Bar officials were uncertain if the action would mean Campbell could no longer serve on the bench. Campbell is on a paid leave of absence while appealing his conviction.

The board suspended Campbell's license until a June 22 hearing on whether to revoke the license. Campbell's attorney, Wayne Lustig, said he will ask that the hearing be continued while Campbell appeals his conviction.

Campbell faces sentencing June 20. A jury recommended he serve four years in prison for the forgery of the ticket and malfeasance in office.

Campbell was accused of ordering his clerks to alter the name on a traffic ticket so the public record would not show that then-Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Sciortino had been cited in a traffic accident. Sciortino was running for re-election and his driving record was an issue in the campaign.
