NAVY JET CRASHES; BOTH PILOTS SAVED

A Navy F-14 Tomcat on a routine training mission crashed Tuesday about 60 miles off the Virginia coast, Navy officials said.

Lt. Russ Greer, a spokesman for the Atlantic Fleet Naval Air Force in Norfolk, said the pilot and radar intercept officer were rescued within an hour of the crash. Greer said neither man was injured.

The plane went down around 2:30 p.m. Greer said the cause of the crash was unknown and is being investigated. The plane was part of Squadron 84 based at the Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach.
