REPORT SAYS LOST WING CAUSED PLANE CRASH

A preliminary federal report indicates the small plane that crashed in rugged Virginia countryside May 10, killing six, had lost a wing before it went down.

The wreckage was discovered near Shady Grove Corner on May 17, more than a week after the six men were reported missing. The six, all from the Washington area, were returning from a fishing trip in North Carolina when the plane disappeared.

The report said the plane's flaps and landing gear were retracted, meaning the pilot probably was not trying to land.

Investigators told reporters at the crash site the plane apparently broke apart in flight. The federal investigatory agency plans to issue a final report on the crash early next year, spokesman Pollock said.
