Tuesday night at Municipal field, Rhodes wasn't nearly as overpowering. This time, however, Frederick gave him some offensive support and Rhodes and the Keys beat Salem 10-5 in a Carolina League baseball game.
Rhodes, who entered the game with a 2-4 record and a 1.97 ERA, gave up 10 hits and struck out just two, but he got the help he needed for a victory. Mike Lehman and Tim Holland hit home runs and Pete Rose II had three RBI as Frederick roughed up Salem starter Bobby Underwood (1-1) for eight runs in four innings.
"They finally got [Rhodes] some runs, that's for sure," said Wally Moon, the Keys' manager. "Arthur has had a 16-strikeout game with no decision and an 11-strikeout game with no decision. This was probably his worse outing. He threw 110 pitches in six innings."
Rose started Frederick going with a two-run single off Underwood, who was making his second start for Salem, in the second inning. The Bucs cut it to 2-1 after three innings when Flavio Williams scored on an error, but Lehman hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Holland highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer.
The Bucs had 14 hits compared to nine for the Keys (30-23), but they stranded 10 runners. In its past two games, Salem has left 23 on base.
\ BUCSHOTS: The Bucs made it an honors sweep last week as Darwin Pennye was selected Carolina League batter of the week and reliever Jim Czajkowski was pitcher of the week. In seven games, Pennye hit .542 with 13 hits, four doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and five RBI. He also stole two bases and had a slugging percentage of .958. Czajkowski appeared in four games and earned four saves. In seven innings pitched, he didn't allow a run and yielded just one hit. He struck out six and walked none.
