DEMOCRATS CHARGE GOP INSPIRED PROTEST

Democratic leaders say they have evidence suggesting a White House aide pulled a political dirty trick and instigated a police union protest that disrupted the party's state convention.

The aide, Ron Kaufman, a special assistant to President Bush and his deputy personnel director, denied he had anything to do with the demonstration.

The protest disrupted the Democratic convention Saturday at the Springfield Civic Center, nearly forcing its cancellation.

The union picketed outside the civic center for several hours. Thousands of delegates refused to cross the picket line and remained outside in wilting heat. Some delegates said they were manhandled by police when they tried to enter.
