NEW U.S. FOREST PLAN EMPHASIZES ECOLOGY

A shift from timber production will mean a higher priority over the next five years for recreation and wildlife habitats in national forest management, Agriculture Secretary Clayton Yuetter said Thursday.

Yeutter and U.S. Forest Service Chief F. Dale Robertson unveiled a long-term plan for forest and range-land resources, calling for greater environmental sensitivity and a better balance among multiple uses of public lands.

"This plan calls for some reductions in timber harvests and livestock range grazing in order to enhance and protect the ecological balances there," he said. - Associated Press
