COMMUNITY SHELTER PAYS LOAN

The Montgomery County Community Shelter has paid off the $10,707.60 second mortgage on the new shelter at 710 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg. The organization cited aggressive fund-raising activities as the source of the income.

In April, $4,046.70 was raised from businesses, churches, and individuals. The shelter plans to remove asbestos, replace subflooring, complete foundation repairs and treat the facility for termites.

Raines Real Estate has agreed to hold the second "Great American Yard Sale" in August, to raise money for the homeless. Businesses interested in donating goods for the sale can call Connie Hedrick at 552-4210.

The board announced that Blacksburg Methodist Church will become a new host church for the community shelter in September, and Lutheran Memorial Church in Blacksburg will follow shortly afterwards.

Serving as a host church includes assisting a homeless family with transportation, baby-sitting and donating household goods.

In other business, the board passed a resolution commending Cheryl Champion, who is leaving New River Community Action, for her help to the community shelter.

The organization will meet again on June 19 at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church.
