\ ROBERT L. SWAIN of Christiansburg and fiscal officer for the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, was honored as the 1990 Friend of Home Economics by the Virginia Home Economics Association.
He has been with the extension service for more than 20 years. Swain was also cited for participation in the VHEA annual meetings and fiscal affairs.
\ G. GARLAND WILSON of Radford is one of 67 lawyers honored for 50 years of membership in the Virginia State Bar.
\ GARY C. HANCOCK, mayor for the town of Pulaski, was appointed chairman of the 1990 Virginia Municipal League Community and Economic Development Policy Committee.
The committee will document the needs and concerns of the member localities by developing policy statements on various issues and by bringing the issues to the attention of the League Legislative Committee.
\ DAVID L. HURD, president of the Christiansburg Primary School PTA, was honored by the school's Parent Teacher Association with the Outstanding Service Award and an Honorary Life Membership for his service to the organization.
\ ROBIN MYERS, son of Derek and Rhoda Myers of Blacksburg and 17-year-old violin student, has been accepted to Encore School for Strings at the Western Reserve Academy in Ohio. The academy offers intensive training for string players.
The Blacksburg Kiwanis Club elected the following 1990-91 officers:\ JIM MARCHMAN, president;\ TOM HEAVENER, vice president; and\ COOPER VIA, treasurer. Three new members for the board of directors are\ CHARLES BOATWRIGHT, MARSHALL FRANK and\ JIM RAKES. Re-appointed as secretary was\ DICK HUMMEL.
State Trooper\ ANTHONY D. PRICE, former Blacksburg resident, received the Superintendent's Award of Merit for outstanding service toward the interdiction of drugs on Virginia highways. He made 29 drug arrests between April 1988 and February 1990. Price earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Old Dominion University and is assigned to the Luray office of the State Police.
\ BRUCE GHOLSON of Floyd was a third-place crafts winner in the 1990 Virginia Prizes for the Visual Arts, held by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. He received his bachelor of fine arts degree A. in ceramics from the University of Georgia and has been a studio potter in Floyd since 1984.
