VIRGINIA BEACH READY TO BUILD WATER PIPELINE

City Council is to vote Monday on whether to open bidding for the first phase of the Lake Gaston water pipeline. With a favorable vote, construction could begin as early as this fall.

But two lawsuits on the matter have yet to be resolved. Opponents of the project, said Friday that any move ahead was premature.

The first phase is a 76-mile section stretching north and east from the lake. The project is expected to take three to five years to complete.

Thomas Leahy III, manager of the project for the Public Utilities Department, said the city believes it's time to begin.

"There have been six lawsuits and the city has won four of them," he said. "The city is very confident in its position in the remaining two. Neither one prevents the city from starting construction." - Associated Press
