METRORAIL EXPLOSION CLOSES INTERSTATE 66

An explosion on a maintenance train Saturday injured two people, temporarily disrupted Metrorail service and forced the closure of adjoining Interstate 66 for several hours.

The explosion occurred about 5 a.m. as the maintenance train was returning to the Alexandria Storage Yard, an Arlington County Fire Department spokesman said.

Mary Bucklew, a spokeswoman for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, said that trains had to be single-tracked on the Orange Line between the Ballston and East Falls Church stations from 8 to 9:30 a.m. while an investigation was conducted.

Metro service was restored at 9:30 a.m., officials said.

The interstate closed at 6 a.m. and was reopened at 7:30 a.m. after Virginia State Police determined there was no danger of further explosions. - Associated Press
