The one-time grants are aimed giving the United Way the flexibility to quickly jump-start new programs that respond to emerging community needs.
The venture grants allow the agency to give money without going through a drawn-out application process or committing itself to a long-term relationship with an organization that is not necessarily a United Way member.
The selections were winnowed from 22 applications requesting more than $235,000.
The organizations getting the grants this year are:
Office of Refugee Settlement - $13,000 for an education project that will use volunteer tutors, school staffers and others to work with refugee students and their parents.
YMCA - $9,000 for Washington Redskins star Gary Clark's "Why Say No" Sports Camp at the Y's Northwest Roanoke branch.
Family Service of Roanoke Valley - $7,592 for in-home counseling and supervision to families in crisis.
TRUST - $7,500 for Teenline, a hotline for teens staffed by teens that is aimed a reducing teen pregnancy, drug abuse, youth suicide and school dropouts.
Planned Parenthood of Southwest Virginia - $5,845 for its "I Don't Fool Around Program," which involves religious groups in educating middle-school youngsters on the hazards of early sexual involvement.
Roanoke Area Ministries - $5,250 for a social services and employment counseling program at RAM House for the homeless or people at risk of becoming homeless.
Mental Health Association - $1,813 for a program aimed at improving self-esteem among children ages 3 to 6.
