Spokeswoman Lisa Thompson said Chander Matta, 21, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sherry Larman.
Matta was being held without bond.
The body of Larman, 26, was found May 26.
The arrest was the result of a joint investigation between Arlington police and authorities in Alexandria, the District of Columbia and the FBI, Thompson said.
WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., reported it was told by unidentified sources that Matta also was a suspect in the slayings of two other prostitutes whose bodies were found in Northern Virginia in the past two weeks.
Sandra Johnson, 20, was found slain in her Arlington apartment on May 31 and Jodie Phillips, 16, was found dead in Alexandria a week-and-a-half ago. Both women were prostitutes who worked in the District and all died of asphyxiation, police said.
Arlington police Lt. Ken Madden said there was evidence taken from Matta's home possibly linking him to the other two slayings.
