Under a plan approved in December, about 40 students were shifted to Willis Elementary School from Floyd Elementary.
After discussing the six requests in executive session, the board approved one "for the welfare of the child," said Board Member Doug Phillips after the meeting. "Hopefully, the child will never know it was considered for it."
Notices of the board's decisions will be mailed to all of those involved.
In other business, the board approved the gifted education plan for the 1990-91 school year.
The plan places new emphasis on staff development and includes detailed evaluation processes, such as student identification procedures.
The gifted plan also calls for differentiation in classroom assignments as well as some system-wide activities for students in the program.
"A child is gifted not just one hour a week, or one day a week, but the whole time," said Linda Knapp, who is finishing her first year as Floyd County's gifted and talented resource teacher.
"That's why its very important to have staff training. We want to start aiming for [higher] level learning skills, not just the [lower] levels."
In another matter, Reba Goff, incoming president of the Floyd County Education Association, met with the board to talk about medical insurance coverage.
Goff told board members that the association endorses the comprehensive medical insurance plan in the state program if its members can have the option of buying into the more complete basic plan.
The board will hold a special meeting June 29. Board Chairman Dale Profitt said it is the annual "close-out meeting. That's where you determine how much cash is in the till."
The board will also set dates for its organizational and regular July meetings at that time.
