CorEast Savings Bank of Roanoke has agreed to sell First Virginia Banks affiliates its deposit accounts and other assets of branches in Brookneal and downtown Harrisonburg. First Virginia Bank-Planters will buy the CorEast office in Harrisonburg and assume $16 million in deposit liabilities there. First Virginia Bank-Piedmont will assume about $10.8 million in deposit liabilities at the Brookneal branch.

A group of retired employees will picket the Salem General Electric plant today, seeking an increase in benefits. Jim Robinson, leader of the group, said GE retirees have received benefit increases of 8.4 percent in the past six years while inflation has risen more than twice that.

Vernitron Corp.'s attempt to overthrow the board of Kollmorgen Corp. in a proxy contest won only 29 percent of the votes of Kollmorgen shareholders at their May 31 annual meeting, election inspectors said. The vote defeated Vernitron's takeover try after more than a year's struggle. Kollmorgen has three Radford operations.
