COUNSEL RECOMMENDS SENATOR BE DENOUNCED

Sen. Dave Durenberger has brought "dishonor and disrepute" on the Senate and should be denounced by his colleagues, the Senate Ethics Committee's special counsel recommended Tuesday.

Robert S. Bennett's recommendation was a surprise on the opening day of the panel's hearings into Durenberger's alleged financial improprieties.

Bennett said the evidence showed a "pattern of unethical conduct" by Durenberger in a book-promotion deal, transactions involving his Minneapolis condominium and his acceptance of free limousine rides. - Associated Press
