FIVE INDICTED IN RADFORD DRUG SWEEP

In an ongoing struggle against drug dealing, police arrested five people Monday and Tuesday on 13 charges of selling drugs.

After a six-week undercover investigation by Radford and state police, a grand jury returned indictments Monday.

All are accused of selling drugs in various parts of the city in recent weeks. Only one lived in Radford. All five were arrested outside the city.

The cases were unrelated, police said.

Warren L. Nolen, 33, of McGee's Trailer Park in Pulaski County, was indicted on four counts of distributing morphine, two counts of attempting to sell methamphetamine and one count of distributing Dilaudid, a powdered drug similar to morphine. He was being held in the Radford City Jail on $75,000 bond.

Robert Wayne Neal, 25, of Montgomery County, was indicted on two counts of distributing morphine and one count of distributing Dilaudid. He was being held in Radford on $30,000 bond.

Barbara Jane Stafford, 46, of Montgomery County, was indicted on one count of distributing cocaine and was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $30,000 bond.

Ron Way, 45, of Preston Street in Radford, was indicted on one count of distributing cocaine. He was arrested in Roanoke and released on bond.

Larry H. Kidd II, 24, of Clearview Street in Christiansburg, was indicted on one count of distributing heroin and was being held in Radford on $15,000 bond.

Radford Lt. J.L. Roop said police haven't seen heroin or arrested anyone on a heroin charge in a long time. "It's been a while since that's been around here," he said.

Commonwealth's Attorney Randal Duncan said he was pleased that in six weeks police were able to round up five suspects.

"You're not going to get rid of the problem overnight. You're just going to have to keep plugging away like this," Duncan said.
