ANTI-ABORTION CHURCH SUES POLICE, CLINIC

A church active in the anti-abortion movement has filed a lawsuit against Norfolk and Chesapeake police and a women's clinic alleging its rights of free speech, worship and assembly were violated.

The New Creation Community Church said in the suit filed Monday in Chesapeake Circuit Court that the officers interrupted a worship service to serve papers on church members involved in a lawsuit filed by the Hillcrest Clinic.

The church asked for $359 million in damages.

The clinic was seeking an injunction against the church's pastor, J. Donald Varela, and members of his congregation from blocking the clinic's entrances and harassing its patients.
