SUMMER CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL BEGINS JUNE 30

The annual Summer Chamber Music Festival at Bath County's Garth Newel Music Center will begin June 30 with a performance of Three Pieces for Soprano, Violin, Cello and Harpsichord by Handel; Samuel Barber's "Dover Beach" for Baritone and String quartet; and Brahms' Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, for Piano and Strings.

The festival's first weekend will conclude Sunday with "Only in America," a concert featuring the music of Barber, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Ira Gershwin and others.

The Garth Newel Music Center is located between Hot Springs and Warm Springs.

Its summer music festival will continue through Labor Day weekend, with concerts every Saturday and Sunday. There will be 20 separate programs during the 10-week period. Concerts take place in the Herter Hall music shed.

Making the music will be the Garth Newel Piano Trio, which is in residence at the center; the Albemarle Ensemble from Charlottesville; the Charleston Pro Musica; and 15 individual guest instrumentalists and vocalists.

Among the latter are violinist Nicolas Danielson, violist Evelyn Grau, baritone Robert Kennedy and tenor Gene Tucker.

Members of the Garth Newel Piano Trio are violinist Arlene Di Cecco, cellist Luca Di Cecco and pianist Paul Nitsch. The Di Ceccos are co-artistic directors of the center.

The composers whose work will be performed during the summer include Benjamin Britten, Faure, Saint-Saens, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, Smetana, Debussy, Schubert, Richard Strauss, Dvorak, Prokofiev, Corelli, Milhaud, Hugo Wolf, Borodin and Elgar.

"Fibers," a new work by contemporary composr Marshall Griffith, will be performed during a July 28 program for two pianos. Joining Paul Nitsch will be pianist Anne Epperson.

The Charleston Pro Musica will appear on Aug. 25, playing music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods on instruments characteristic of the periods.
