NEW REPORT SHOWS CONSUMER CAUTION

Business inventories inched upward 0.1 percent in April while sales fell 1.1 percent, the government said Thursday in the second report this week showing increasing consumer caution.

The Commerce Department said business inventories totaled a seasonally adjusted $794.46 billion, up from $793.67 billion in March, and business sales totaled a seasonally adjusted $533.04 billion, down from $535.99 billion in March.

In a report on Wednesday, the department said retail sales in May fell 0.7 percent. - Associated Press
