GOV. WILDER TELLS LAWYERS TO SERVE CLIENTS

At a state Bar Association meeting, Gov. Douglas Wilder scolded fellow members of the legal profession for an unseemly interest in self-promotion and too little attention to clients' real needs.

"Our profession is one of a few that has a code of ethical conduct and that code is supposed to guide our professional lives," Wilder said Friday night. "But I think there are some who have become less and less sure of the wisdom and the applicability of our ethics - flaunting a `the rules apply to others, not to me' attitude."

The governor said there are too many instances in which lawyers "take cases on the basis of whether or not they enable them to make a name for themselves or whether the case will attract significant media attention."

Wilder's remarks followed recent disclosures that the state Democratic Party still owes $60,000 in legal fees to the lawyers hired to represent the governor in his gubernatorial recount seven months ago.
