GRATEFUL STUDENT TREATS TEACHERS

When the bell rang signaling a summer without pencils, books and dirty looks from teachers, seventh-grader Kevin Long was waiting with two chauffeur-driven limousines to take eight of his teachers to eat steak lunches.

"This is my way to say thanks," said Kevin, who completed seventh grade Friday at Tuckahoe Middle School. "I have some really good teachers. They've helped me a lot."

Kevin spent almost $400 on lunch, his mother, Candace Long, said. He said he earned part of the money mowing yards, doing other yardwork and baby-sitting for children in his neighborhood. She said Kevin will do more odd jobs this summer to pay his parents back for money they advanced him.

"Kevin knows it's hard work being a teacher and he likes to pay them back a bit," his mother said. "He likes to share what he has with other people. If he wants to do this next year, well, it's his money to spend as he pleases."

Kevin said he also picked up the check for lunch and limousine rentals a year ago for his sixth-grade teachers.

None of his fellow students teased him about giving his teachers a luxurious trip to an expensive luncheon.

"Everybody thought it was pretty cool," he said.

His homeroom teacher, Toni Martin, said, "It's a pleasant surprise."

"Kevin is a very polite and cooperative young man," said his math teacher, Donna Llewellyn.
