Saturday night at Municipal Field, Miller pitched eight scoreless innings and scattered five hits as the Bucs beat the Kinston Indians 7-0 in a Carolina League baseball game.
In three of Miller's past five starts, Salem has come away with shutout victories.
"I didn't really feel all that great," said Miller, who lost 1-0 to Peninsula in his last start. "My fastball wasn't really that effective, but they hit a lot of grounders and the guys behind me made all the plays."
Miller (3-2) struck out just one and walked four, but 15 of the 24 outs he recorded were ground balls.
The only real threat he faced was in the sixth inning when the Indians' first two hitters reached. Then Jamie Allison struck out, Nolan Lane hit into a fielder's choice and Marc Tepper ended the inning with a ground out.
The Bucs got the only run they would need in the second inning, when Darwin Pennye blasted a home run over the left-field wall off Kinston starter Chris Cole (0-1). Pennye added his second homer of the game, his eighth of the season, deep to left to lead off the sixth against reliever Scott Neill.
That homer was worth $60 to Pennye and Gracie Short, a 9-year-old student at West Salem Elementary School, because it came during a sponsor's contest inning.
Salem put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning.
With one out, Ben Shelton reached on an error, then scored on a double by Mike Huyler. Flavio Williams singled in Huyler, and Greg Sims reached on Kinston's second error of the inning.
Cole was replaced by Neill, and he struck out Bruce Schreiber for the second out. Then Mike Brewington punched a single to right that scored Williams and Sims to make the score 5-0.
\ BUCSHOTS: Steve Buckholz (6-3) will be on the mound for the Bucs tonight as they conclude the series against the Indians. Tommy Kramer (6-3), among the Carolina League leaders with a 2.63 ERA,will pitch for Kinston . . . Reliever Jeff Neely, who started the season as the Bucs' closer, has moved up to Class AAA. He has made three appearances for the Buffalo Bison and recorded a save. In 3 innings, Neely hasn't given up a run and has struck out three. . . . Center fielder Moises Alou, who spent half of last season in Salem, is hitting .320 with two homers and 14 RBI for the Bison.
