HIBDON TOP B.A.S.S. ANGLER

Guido Hibdon, a soft-spoken, gray-bearded fisherman, the kind of guy a lot of kids would like to call granddad, is the 1990 B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year.

Guido Hibdon, from Gravois Mills, Mo., will be in a field of 41 fishermen in the annual BASS Masters Classic World Championship on the James River at Richmond, Aug. 23-25. He won the Classic there in 1988 and placed fourth last year.

Thirty-six Classic contenders already have qualified, and the remaining five will be determined during the Wrangler/B.A.S.S. National Federation Championship at Smith Mountain Lake, June 28-30.

The only Virginian to qualify thus far is Woo Daves of Chester, the state's most successful competitive bass angler for more than a decade. Daves was tenth in the Top 100 Super B.A.S.S. Pro-Am Tournaments.

Anglers who finished in the top 15 of the pro-am events and the top 20 of the BASSMASTERS Invitational tournaments qualified for the Classic. Last year's winner, Hank Parker of Denver, N.C., got an automatic berth.

The B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year standings no longer are a qualifying consideration, but the title, which goes to the fisherman with the most pounds of bass in B.A.S.S. events, remains prestigious. Second to Hibdon was Gary Klein of Montgomery, Texas.

Several of the well-known pros who didn't make the Classic include Paul Elias, who finished sixth last year and won the event in 1982 and Stanley Mitchell, eighth last year and the winner in 1981.
