NATIONAL LEAGUE NOTES

Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner has been dead for 35 years, but he is in one of the worst slumps of his career.

Wagner hasn't played since 1917, but the eighth and latest edition of Macmillan's Baseball Encyclopedia has deleted 12 hits and shaved .002 from his batting average in previous editions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom Wagner played from 1900 through 1917, are unhappy the changes were made without the consultation of the committee established by former Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti to approve such alterations in records and statistics.

Rick Wolff, the encyclopedia's editor, said the changes resulted from input from various sources, including his research staff, the Baseball Hall of Fame and statisticians at the Elias Sports Bureau and the Society for American Baseball Research.
