George Thomas Finney, 57, died from shotgun wounds to his chest and back, according to sheriff's investigator K.W. Wescott.
The victim's son, Andrew Lee Finney, was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony, Wescott said.
Wescott said the shooting apparently was sparked by an argument between Finney and his son, who lived together in a trailer on Virginia 647.
George Finney left the trailer after the argument and returned around 11:30 p.m., when he was shot in the front yard, Wescott said. Finney ran to a neighbor's house and collapsed on the front porch. He died a short time later at a hospital in Martinsville, Wescott said.
Andrew Finney was arrested without incident at his trailer and was in the Henry County Jail Sunday in lieu of $10,000 bond. Authorities seized a 20-gauge shotgun they believe was used in the killing.
