\ LEXINGTON - George Breeden Ax, age 78, died Sunday at a local hospital. Born in Bayonne, N.J., Col. Ax was a 1933 graduate of Virginia Military Institute in civil engineering and received his M.A. degree in mathematics at Columbia University. He was emeritus professor of mathematics at VMI where he taught for 33 years and served as Assistant Commandant. He served part-time for 10 years on the faculty of Southern Seminary College. A member of the U.S. Army Reserve for 38 years, he was on active duty 1935 to 1937 and 1941 to 1947. Active in area chapters of numerous organizations, he was the founder and first president of the area chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and was president of the American Cancer Society, Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, and Virginia Museum. He had served the Stonewall Jackson Area Boy Scouts, SPCA, United Way Board, American Red Cross, Fortnightly Club, Historical Society, English Speaking Union, Stonewall Jackson Hospital Board, Lexington Lions Club, Masonic Order, and had been a member of the Lexington Town Council, director of the Associate for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, a trustee of the VMI Foundation and an elder in the Lexington Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, Katharine W. Ax; survivors include two sons, George R. Ax, Burke; John H. Ax, Lexington; one daughter, Katharine A. Huffman, Gordonsville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Friends may call at the home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the VMI Foundation or your favority charity. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lomax Funeral Home, Buena Vista.
