The 25 winners from among more than 150 entries are in three age divisions.
In the adult division, the top three essay winners, in order, were C.R. Crackel, Clifton Forge; Patricia Widner, Wytheville; and Mary Roberts, Richmond; for short story, Bob MacCallum, Lynchburg; Jean B. Faglie, Richmond; and C.G. Cruise, Radford; poetry, Patsy Anne Bickerstaff, Weyers Cave; H. Fairfax Conquest, Richmond; and Cruise.
For grades 9-12: essay, Amy Robinette, Rural Retreat; Cindy Poole, Wytheville; and Joy Simmons, Rural Retreat; short story, Wendy Frye, Rural Retreat; Elizabeth Davis, Cripple Creek; and Larry Vernon, Rural Retreat; poetry, April Joy Asbury, Pulaski; Jennifer Brossy, Wytheville; and Danielle Groves, Wytheville.
Grades 5-8: short story, Ryan Crackel, Clifton Forge; Stacy Craft, Wytheville; and Chip Vernon, Rural Retreat; poetry, Bo Lethco, Rural Retreat; Lily Diss (who also won a second-place essay award, the only one given in that category), Rural Retreat; and Christina Jones, Speedwell.
The awards will follow a 9 a.m. poetry-writing workshop by Tennessee poet Harry Dean at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church. A collection of first-place writing from the contests's last three years will be on sale for $5.
