Peggy S. Linkous, 24, of Speedwell, who picked the winning combination - 2-4-6-8-9-34 - in Saturday's Lotto drawing, and her husband, Larry, a truck driver at Wythe County's landfill operation, learned that their jackpot amounts to more than $3.5 million.
Peggy Linkous said the numbers she chose had no particular significance.
They collected their first check for $135,524, after taxes, and will be collecting more than $126,000 annually for the next 19 years.
A lottery official said it was the fourth largest jackpot ever awarded in Virginia. The jackpot was the ninth Lotto prize claimed since the game began Jan. 17.
Larry Linkous Sr., Peggy Linkous' father-in-law, said the couple will be depositing the money in the Bank of Speedwell, where three generations of his family have done business, and will be getting financial counseling from the bank.
The couple had been ready to drive to Richmond for confirmation of the winning numbers, but state officials decided to visit Southwest Virginia for the ceremony.
"I just about fell over when I realized we had won," said Peggy Linkous, 24, who purchased the winning ticket at a store in Speedwell.
