RUSSIAN COMMUNISTS TO FORM SEPARATE PARTY

Russian Communists are to gather today to establish their first separate party organization in 65 years amid signs that old-guard conservatives will seize the moment for a last stand against a market economy and a decentralized Soviet Union.

Because the conference will be attended by most of the delegates to the 28th Soviet Communist Party Congress opening in July, it is seen as a rehearsal for that crucial event, which appears increasingly likely to see the party shatter along ideological lines.
