WOMAN CHARGED IN SLAYING OF BOYFRIEND

A 21-year-old Roanoke woman was charged Monday night with stabbing her boyfriend to death at the apartment they shared.

Brenda Leatrice Baker, a mother of two who said she is expecting a third child, was charged with second-degree murder. Baker, of the 3600 block of Ferncliff Avenue Northwest, was being held late Monday in the Roanoke City Jail. Bond was set at $25,000.

Christopher Vernand Hunter, 28, died of stab wounds to his upper body, police said.

The stabbing happened about 8 p.m. Hunter was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to the hospital by a rescue crew.

A police spokesman said Baker called the police after Hunter was taken away by the ambulance and asked officers to come talk with her. She told police that she and Hunter had been arguing and he had become violent toward her, police said.
