The award, named for the first Emory & Henry graduate to join its faculty, honors a faculty member each year for excellence of teaching and service beyond the classroom.
The choir started by Davis is composed of the 40 top singers at the college each year and goes on extensive tours each year besides giving two or more concerts on campus. Its highest honor came in 1983 when it gave the premiere performance of "Twelve Canticles" at the request of the composer, Randall Thompson, who had developed admiration for Davis and his program during a campus visit.
A Tazewell native, Davis graduated from Emory & Henry, earned bachelor's and master's music degrees from Westminster Choir College and doctor of music from Indiana University. He is a teacher and choral conductor at Emory & Henry, where he has taught for 33 years.
