SCHOLAR OF BLACK AMERICAN STUDIES DIES

St. Clair Drake, 79, professor emeritus of anthropology at Stanford University and a noted scholar in black American studies, died June 14.

He was co-author of "Black Metropolis," the 1945 classic study of black life in Chicago. He also was a chronicler, in books and scholarly articles, of the turmoil and advances in race relations in the 1960s.

His parents were a Virginia minister and schoolteacher. He was born in Suffolk, Va.
