ARTS FUNDING'S FUTURE IN HANDS OF HOUSE

The future of the National Endowment for the Arts, clouded by political furor over works of art deemed offensive, will be fought out on the floor of the House.

A House committee voted Tuesday to kick the issue to the full House in a move that acknowledged the panel was unable to resolve deep divisions over whether and how to restructure the federal arts agency.

At issue is a bill continuing the endowment for another five years, without any restrictions on grants and controversial works of art.

The full House probably will consider the bill in mid-July, said Speaker Thomas Foley, D-Wash.
