A: The National Hemlock Society of Eugene, Ore., is an educational service that provides information and books on the subject of euthanasia (the act or method of causing death painlessly so as to end suffering) for the terminally ill.
The fee to join the society is $20 for an individual or $25 for a couple under 60, and $15 for an individual and $20 for a couple over 60.
Members receive quarterly newsletters, a Living Will with a durable power of attorney (for example, if you were in the hospital and unable to speak, someone would have the authority to speak your medical wishes for you), and a card to place in your wallet that states your wishes about dying.
