RAYON PLANT IN NEED OF LONG-TERM CLEANUP

Long-term cleanup of water and soil pollution at the site of a closed Virginia rayon-fiber plant will be "expensive and lengthy," an Environmental Protection Agency official told Congress on Wednesday.

Assessing lingering pollution problems at the Front Royal, Va., site of the plant formerly operated by Avtex Fibers Inc., Edwin Erickson said it will cost an estimated $10 million to treat contaminated ground water.

Beyond that, he told a Senate Environment subcommittee, authorities must remove viscose material from 85 acres of lagoons surrounding the 440-acre plant site at "an unknown cost and treatment length." Viscose is an amber-colored, syrup-like byproduct from treating wood pulp.
