LAWYER APPEALING CONTEMPT CHARGE

David P. Baugh, a well-known criminal defense lawyer in Richmond, was sentenced to 10 days in jail after being held in contempt in General District Court.

Judge Ralph Robertson cited Baugh for contempt Tuesday and ordered sheriff's deputies to lock him up. Baugh immediately appealed, and Robertson released the attorney on his own recognizance pending the appeal to Circuit Court.

A confrontation between Baugh and Robertson erupted when Baugh was defending a man who had been charged with shoplifting two bottles of wine valued at $3.69 from a convenience store, courtroom witnesses said.

A store employee had testified that he had seen the defendant put the wine bottles in his pants. Baugh attempted to have the defendant put the wine bottles in his pants in court to see whether they would fit, but Robertson halted the demonstration. Baugh objected and an argument began, witnesses said.
