TRIPLING OF STAR WARS SPENDING BEING ASKED

Pentagon planners want to triple spending on the Star Wars antimissile system over the next six years, a Senate panel chairman says.

Sen. James Exon, D-Neb., said Defense Secretary Dick Cheney's internal budget planning documents show a projected spending total of $58 billion for the 1992-97 period for Star Wars, known officially as the Strategic Defense Initiative, or SDI.

Charles Herzfeld, director of defense research and engineering at the Pentagon, told Exon at a hearing Wednesday that he could not discuss the budget figure openly because it was classified.
