CAVE SPRING COACH GUARDS SOCCER TITLE

Coach Ed Stier kept the Cave Spring domination in Roanoke Valley junior high soccer alive in his first season as coach. The Squires won their sixth straight league title as Stier guided the team to a 9-1 record.

The only loss was 2-1 to Hidden Valley in the season's finale, a game that was postponed twice because of rain. Cave Spring won its first game against Hidden Valley 5-0.

Hidden Valley and Northside each had 6-4 records, while William Byrd was 5-4-1 and Franklin County was 2-5-3. Stier said the toughest game he had, outside of the loss to Hidden Valley, was a 4-3 double-overtime decision over Byrd. Forward Bobby Warnick scored the winning goal with 30 seconds left.

Warnick was one of four players from Cave Spring to make the all-star team, which was selected by the coaches. Other Squires making the team were halfback David Penn, fullback Ed Quioco and forward Martin Szumanski, the only eighth-grader to be honored.

Northside, Byrd and Hidden Valley each had two players selected, while the other spot went to Ut Thach of Franklin County.

Northside all-stars are goalie Jason Roberts and fullback Bryan VanRavestein. Picked from Byrd were halfbacks Scott Kelley and Kevin Niday. Hidden Valley's picks are fullback Steve Semones and forward Mark Roberts.
