OBIT JANSSON, F.

JANSSON, FLORENCE E.

Mrs. Florence E. Pedigo Jansson died Wednesday, June 20, 1990, in a local nursing home, after a long illness following a broken hip. She was born in Patrick County, Va., June 9, 1896, a daughter of Daniel T. and Delia H. Foley Pedigo. She attended public school and the Methodist Church at Woolwine, Va., and taught a class of Junior boys and girls at this church for several years. She was among the first students to attend Ferrum High School in the first years of its operation. Her senior year was interrupted by an appointment to civil service duty in Washington, D.C., during World War I. She completed high school in the D.C. school system, taking advantage of available evening classes and later returned to Ferrum to receive her high school diploma with the Class of 1920. She continued her education at George Washington University, where she graduated with an AB Degree. During her working years in Washington, she became a member of the District Branch of the National League of American Pen Women and won several awards and honorable mention for her published poems, and other literary achievements. After the end of World War I, she was married to William Peter Jansson, a Hollander, who had served with the U.S. Marine Corps through the war years. Mrs. Jansson resigned her civil service job and she and her husband moved to New York. They bought a home on Long Island and commuted to their respective jobs in New York City, but as the on-going post war depression took its toll of desirable employment opportunities, Mrs. Jansson returned to Washington and was reinstated in civil service as a correspondent in the Veteran's Administration, where she worked until her voluntary retirement at age 62. Mr. Jansson remained in New York until the time of his death some years later. On retirement, Mrs. Jansson moved to New Castle in Craig County, Va., bought a wooded building lot adjacent to Jefferson State Park and erected a small cabin type "temporary" home, where she lived happily for several years. She participated in the areas local activities and continued to pursue her literary vocation. She attended the Bethel United Methodist Church and took turns teaching an adult bible class there. She was also an active member of the Allied Families of Patrick and Henry Counties, however, with advancing years it became a matter of prudence to leave her beloved solitary retreat and she moved into Shenandoah Homes, a retirement and adult care center in Roanoke from which she eventually transferred to a full service nursing home, where she died at age 94. She was predeceased by three brothers, Eugene B., Dwight L., and Joseph D. Pedigo; one sister, Lenna Pedigo Kaskin; one sister-in-law, Jennie Spencer Pedigo. Surviving are one sister, Louise V. Pedigo, Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Mabel B. Pedigo, Salem; other survivors are five nephews; three great-nephews; two great-great-nephews; two nieces; seven great-nieces; two great-great-nieces. Funeral services will be conducted in Woolwine United Methodist Church with the Rev. R. C. Wilson officiating, assisted by the Rev. John J. Snipes, Woolwine Pastor, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 22, 1990. Interment in Woolwine Church Cemetery. Lotz Vinton Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations for needy children are suggested.
