SECTIONAL WALKOUTS PLANNED AT GE

About 20 quality-control inspectors at the General Electric plant in Salem are expected to leave their jobs early tonight. Their protest is over wage rates, said Bob Semones, president of Local 161, International Union of Electronic Workers.

The union and the company "are at kind of an impasse," he said. The sectional walkout could last up to five days, Semones said, and other hourly employees may join the action.

About 14 employees of the renewal parts section at GE's Plant No. 2 in Salem expect to leave their jobs Monday over recognition of doctors' excuses, he said. Semones said the unit walkouts will be the first at the plant in more than six months.

A company spokesman could not be reached for comment.
