GARFINCKEL'S FILES FOR COURT PROTECTION

Garfinckel's, one of the Washington area's first upscale retailers, announced Thursday it will lay off a fourth of its employees, close seven department stores and open two smaller specialty stores for women.

Garfinckel's filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia. Its nine stores, all in the metropolitan Washington area, will remain open through inventory liquidation. - Associated Press
