TOBACCO GROWING DECLINE MAY GO ON

The number of farms growing tobacco in the United States is declining, and an Agriculture Department analyst says the trend probably will continue.

In 1987, only 137,000 farms produced tobacco, an average of 4.6 acres per farm. That compared with 179,000 farms and an average of 5.2 acres in 1982 and represented a 73 percent drop from 512,000 in 1954. - Associated Press
