John Stokely, who was president of Miller & Rhoads Inc. for much of its bankruptcy process, has left an executive post with financially troubled Silk Greenhouse Inc. of Tampa, Fla., citing personal reasons.

House Democrats Wednesday unveiled a proposal that would take $100 million out of the defense budget to provide retraining and other assistance to the hundreds of thousands of workers expected to be displaced by major defense budget cuts. Another $100 million would be used to help communities develop nonmilitary industries.

The Virginia Department of World Trade will sponsor a half-day "how to" seminar on international marketing, finance and transportation at Virginia Western Community College at a date to be determined in September. The seminar is one of four planned.

Acadia Polymers, a Roanoke company operating a plant at Iron Gate, has won a supplier award of excellence from Xerox and a quality award from Ford.
