400 MINERS SCHEDULE WALKATHON FOR ELDERLY

Members of the United Mine Workers will hold a walkathon Sunday to try to help raise $60,000 for programs carried out by Mountain Empire Older Citizens, which is running out of money for home-delivered meals and homemaker services.

About 400 miners are expected participate in the fund raiser. The effort is part of the 10,000 hours of community service work the UMW has been ordered to perform by a federal judge for violating court orders during its 10 1/2-month strike against Pittston Coal.

Mountain Empire Older Citizens is one of the agencies that has filed a federal suit against state Department of Aging officials over the division of federal funds among the 25 agencies in Virginia.
