NEW RIVER PEOPLE

ASTON S. LEWIS, son of Greg and Diane Lewis of Christiansburg, was awarded a $600 scholarship by the Virginia Dairy Products Association as the Most Improved Student.

Lewis, a student in the department of food science and technology at Virginia Tech, is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists' college bowl team and of the department's dairy sensory evaluation team.

\ STEPHEN REED, of Blacksburg, attended the 1990 National Young Leaders Conference Collegiate Seminar this month.

He was selected for demonstrating academic achievement, leadership and citizenship.

The Radford Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a national fraternity for professional educators, elected 1990-91 officers:

\ JOHN R. HALL III of Blacksburg, an agronomist extension specialist, was honored as an outstanding individual by Virginia Cooperative Extension during the Conference of Professional Associations.

Hall was honored for his work with the annual Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show.

\ ARTHUR L. "IKE" ELLER, of Blacksburg, received a special Director's Award from the head of Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Eller is an extension animal scientist who started in the organization as an agent. He is known for his work in the beef cattle industry.

\ GARY HOOPER, vice provost at Virginia Tech, was named to the Board of Directors of Warm Hearth Inc., a non-profit retirement community in Blacksburg.

The following employees of Hercules Inc., Radford Army Ammunition Plant retired May 1:\ ROSALIE B. PAIGE, of Christiansburg, a patrolman in the security department with 23.7 years of service;\ DON J. STAMMERS, of Dublin, a quality-control operator with 34.6 years of service;\ LEONA W. HOBBS, of Dublin, a purification operator in the nitrocellulose area with 25.8 years of service;\ GEORGE A. WALKER, of Radford, a propellant incinerator operator with 18.2 years of service;\ MILDRED H. WHITT, of Pulaski, a chief poacher operator in the nitrocellulose area, with 21.3 years of service;\ OAKLEY N. BANES, of Pulaski, an inert gas operator with 38 years of service; and\ JEFFERSON M. HALL, of Hillsville, a boiling tub operator in the nitrocellulose area, with 24.9 years of service.

\ EMILIE BROOME, assistant vice president and branch manager of Coreast Savings Bank in Blacksburg, was presented an award by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New River Valley.

Broome participated in the organization's annual fund-raiser, "Bowl For Kids' Sake," by forming five teams which raised over $1,000.

Virginia Tech students\ KENDALL E. GILES, an electrical engineering major, and\ JENNIFER L. GOODALL, a mechanical engineering student, were awarded $1,500 Litton Industries scholarships for 1990-91 by the company's local division, Poly-Scientific in Blacksburg.

Both students made the Dean's List for academic excellence.
